Day 6 - The Update

17 pilots started today and the task is valid with 25% of them covering at least 100 km. Jimenez (CHI), Cronrath (GER), Boher (CHI), Naretto (CHI) and Rocca R (CHI) have already landed back in Vitacura, leaving 12 pilots in the air. The heavy cirrus cover is still over the area and after being towed to the release area, the pilots have been unable to gain much height, forcing them to start at a very low altitude and crawl back to the Cerro Manquehue, where they are waiting for the cirrus to clear (to the west we can see already clear skies) and move on with the task.

Day 6 - The Late Task News

Todays weather is not what we usually see during this time of the year: the trail of a cold front entering the south of Chile from the Pacific puts a heavy cirrus cover over the competition area, making a task rather unlikely. A 3:30 AAT with a nominal distance of 476 km and a mínimun distance  of 300 km is what the pilots face today.

Day 5 - The Winner Of the Day

Finally the Europeans could outrace the locals on their own turf: Sebastian Kawa (POL) and Alexander Späth (GER) placed first and second respectively, followed by Rene Vidal (CHI) in third and Carlos Rocca V (CHI) in fourth place. The day proved to be a fast oone with the top speed of 126 km/h. A great respect to the task setter and CD Arturo Diez, who even in moderate conditions makes for speedy race courses.

Day 5 - The Inversion

The inversion at 2500 meters QNH is getting stronger and it will be pure luck if it can be broken in dynamic conditions, so the task today is a 420 km racing task at the lower levels, with the first TP to the north at Chincolco. The high Morado pass, east of the Morado summit, won't be a factor this time like it has been for the flight further north, as the competitors should be able to fly west of the summit into the Chincolco valley. From there it will be a race south to La Gloria, but beware, that before heading back to Vitacura from the south the race goes a little north of Vitacura to Termas de Colina. If the day behaves like yesterday, Termas will be a hard spot to reach or if reached, to go back to Vitacura, as the pilots have to then go to TP Mapocho. This diversion to Mapocho, means that they will have to cross a ridge to get there... tricky again!

Day 4 - The Results

Stanislaw Wujczak (POL) was towed back from Salamanca before the days end as well as Andreas Lutz (AUT) from El Algarrobo. Sebastian Kawa parked his glider for half an hour in some remote ridge, but made it also back home completing the task. Many flew north, but suffered south of Vitacura and back to Valle de la Muerte, ditching the task even before getting to this last TP.

The Chileans Vidal and Rocca V flew superbly again, landing in the 1st and 2nd place respectively. Alexander Späth (GER) has also been a tough competitor, if not for his starting turnpoint error yesterday. And we cannot forget Sebastian Kawa (POL) who even though today he had a bad day, is still in third position in the general standings.
